bolt webbrowser, Applications SE, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, samsung, BlackBerry, LG

BOLT is a free downloadable browser that offers an uncompromised browsing experience on even lower-end mobile phones. Rather than offering a simplified, mini version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with a fast, efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices. Built on Bitstream’s ThunderHawk browsing technology, BOLT is the result of 5+ years experience developing mobile browsers that optimize usability, speed and performance on resource-constrained systems with limited memory, processing power and screen space.

The Features:
It’s Java ME (J2ME), so it should work on most featurephones. Don’t expect it to work on your iPhone, though.
WebKit based rendering engine

  • Relatively lightweight - 150kb storage, 500kb of RAM required
  • Fast! In BOLT’s words: “Bitstream measured download speeds of 13 popular websites including Amazon.com, CNN.com, ESPN.com and nytimes.com. The second fastest browser averaged download speeds in excess of 18 seconds across all pages. On the same phones, using the same networks, BOLT’s average download speed was under 13 seconds, a full 5.5 seconds faster. “
  • Like Opera Mini (the main J2ME competition), data is passed through a proxy for rendering and compression before being passed to the handset, speeding things up and saving battery life. It’s generally a good thing, though such practices tend to spook most security-minded folk. Pages are compressed at a rate of 23:1.
  • RSS reader built in, with automatic feed detection
  • “Split screen browsing” - 2/3 of the screen shows the full page, serving as a mini-map with a highlighting box, while the other 1/3 shows the magnified area.
  • URL auto completion
  • Phone numbers automatically parsed for Click-to-call
  • User interface is currently English only, but the browser can render pages written in any Western-European language.
  • AJAX support, and Flash video support (Sort of - it’ll take FLV files and convert them to the more mobile-friendly 3GP format, streaming that to you.) Note that that’s Flash video, not Flash in its entirety.

BlackBerry Pearl 8220

Posted by Admin | 4:12 PM | | 0 comments »

The first RIM smartphone to come with a flip design, known until now as BlackBerry KickStart, will in fact be released under the official name of BlackBerry Pearl 8220. Therefore, the upcoming clamshell smartphone will be the fifth device from the Pearl series, which is currently comprised of the following models: BlackBerry 8100, BlackBerry 8110, BlackBerry 8120 and BlackBerry 8130.

Research In Motion has not yet fully presented the new Pearl but, according to CrackBerry, the new smarpthone will be on sale in Canada starting mid-September, offered by Rogers. The price of the ex-KickStart is currently not known, but its' rumored to be of around $50 with a contract agreement. This would make the Pearl 8220 one of the most affordable smartphones ever, even more affordable than Palm's Centro, which has been sold until now in over 2 million units.

If we're to believe a leaked fact sheet with the BlackBerry Pearl 8220, its target is represented by the following categories of users: "young urbanites", "multi-tasking women" and "mobile men". As for the features of the flip smartphone, these are not too different from the ones found in the other Pearl handsets.

Of course, being a clamshell, the new 8220 brings an external display, said to have 160 x 128 pixels and to quickly show incoming calls, messages and so on. Other than that, the handset should pack a 240 x 320 pixels internal display, a SureType QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM connectivity (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) with GPRS and EDGE, Wi-Fi, a 2 Megapixel camera with flash and video recording, Media player, Bluetooth (probably 2.0 with A2DP), a 3.5mm headset jack, HTML browser, advanced email capabilities, embedded games and 80MB of internal memory, expandable via a microSD or microSDHC card.

Besides being launched in Canada, the Pearl 8220 will also get a US release, at about the same time, via T-Mobile.
