Average customer review:
Every Mac comes with 90 days of telephone support and one year of service coverage at an Apple-authorized repair center. The AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Pro (MA515LL/A) extends the complimentary coverage on your MacBook Pro to three years of world-class support. The plan includes expert telephone assistance, global repair coverage, web-based resources, and TechTool Deluxe from Micromat--all for one economical price.

This comprehensive AppleCare Protection Plan covers your MacBook Pro, as well as an AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Apple RAM purchased for your MacBook Pro. You can also register one Apple display for coverage, provided the Mac and display are purchased together.

Extend your coverage to three years of service and expert telephone technical support.

You've got a new MacBook Pro. Let's face it, it wasn't cheap. The standard 90 day telephone support / one year warranty seems pretty long. Buying a protection plan seems like unnecessary expense. These things work incredibly well and are incredibly reliable.

So what do you need Applecare for?

Well first of all your MacBook Pro is going to last a lot longer than one year. I have had my 17" MBP for over two years and it runs like it is just out of the box (try saying that about any Windows notebook). But it is a computer. It has moving parts. It is in other words a mechanical device. Any mechanical device can fail.

Now someone posted a review that said Applecare isn't insurance. That reviewer is right. But it is a very generous warranty. I have sent my MBP in three times (twice to my local Apple Store which can do repairs locally many times) and once to the service center. Only one problem was critical-a dead display. The others were for issues I had taken to the Genius Bar only to learn that I needed replacement parts. One was a HD issue (even though the HD was working) and the other was a keyboard problem. Total cost? Zero dollars.

My stepson has the same model MBP as I do, and got his at the same time. He did not buy Applecare and so far has been very lucky. But he did have a dead display which was initially slated to go to the Service Center for repair at a cost around the same as Applecare. Fortunately the store opened the case before shipping it out and found a loose connection. The cost for cracking the case and pushing a wire into a slot? $80 (still a lot cheaper than a trip to the Service Center).

So bite the bullet and get Applecare. It may not be insurance but it certainly is peace of mind.

Average customer review:

However, if you have an Apple store handy, I recommend you buy there instead. From the first time I turned on the laptop, the dvd drive made a loud noise every time I turned it on or woke it up from sleep. I took it to the nearest Apple Genius bar and they agreed it was wrong, and offered to trade in for a brand new one. Then they found out I bought from Amazon, so they couldn't do that. Instead I had to mail my laptop to AppleCare and wait for them to say there was nothing wrong, and then send it back fixed(!). Weirdness of AppleCare aside, I could have started using my laptop a week earlier if I'd bought it from Apple.

Excellent hardware, but sharp corners!
I bought one of these the day they were released. However, every time I would get up from using my laptop for a drink or potty break, my wife would steal it! She was hooked. I told her that we had to get a laptop for her so that I could use mine. We went to Best Buy and test-drove a few cheaper PC/Vista laptops. None of them even remotely stacked up to the quality of the aluminum unibody MacBook Pro. She -had- to have a 15.4" widescreen LCD that could be viewed from sharper angles than sitting directly in front of the screen. She -had- to have a backlit keyboard. She -had- to have a glass, button-less touchpad. That narrowed it down. She -had- to have a 15" unibody MacBook Pro.

All-in-all, we love just about everything about our laptops. My only complaint is the sharp edges. The 90-degree edge where your wrists wrest is uncomfortable for any lengthy coding or writing sessions. And the notch cut out in the middle below the touchpad has VERY sharp corners. I have actually nicked myself a couple of times on it.

I would actually give this laptop a 4.5 out of 5 because of the edges. However, Amazon doesn't support half-stars, so I rounded up.

Oh, and this laptop made me a "switcher". I bought a Mac Mini as an HTPC a few years ago, but never used it much. Now, with this laptop, I never touch either of my high-powered Vista gaming rigs. Sure, gaming on a Mac leaves a lot to be desired, and I haven't had any luck with the virtualization software for gaming (VMware, Parallels), but that's not my primary usage. I'm a web developer and use an array of applications. If you're a hardcore PC person, give a Mac a spin. You'll find you can do anything on a Mac that you can do on PC. It's a little unfamiliar at first, but it is just so much easier and cleaner-feeling and nearly hassle-free.

Piece of Art - Carved to Perfection - Incredible Laptop
I have owned many different computers over the years (mostly Macs with a Mac clone somewhere in there). This is, hands down, the best computer I have ever owned. It is a solid body unit, with a gorgeous screen, backlit keyboard, and everything you could want in a laptop. The new multitouch trackpad just finishes this off as a must buy.

If you are on the fence about getting a new laptop (to run the MacOS or Windows) - this IS the laptop you have always wanted.

PROS
Great Screen (some don't like the gloss, but I think it's bright enough to not matter)
Backlit Keyboard (great when in a dark room)
Solid, Unibody Construction (light but solid)
Good Speakers
Very unique multi-touch trackpad that adds a lot to the laptop
Very powerful and feature loaded

CONS
It's not cheap - but you get what you pay for.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic hits shelves in the United States

Nokia announced today that the highly anticipated Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is now available in the United States. The latest in Nokia’s XpressMusic range, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers an affordable music device with a touch screen interface to the mass market.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer a powerful sound.

“When it comes to music phones, people all over the world want a device that is a great music experience and still works really well as a mobile phone, without sacrificing features,” said Ian Laing, Vice President, North America Sales, Nokia. “The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers on this and has clearly proven to be a device that consumers are clamoring for - selling more than one million worldwide since its introduction a few months ago.”

Making the most of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers easy and fast access to all music, video and photos through a one-touch ‘Media Bar’ drop down menu. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the Web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf even more of the web.

The innovative ‘Contacts Bar’ lets people highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

Among the highest screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2″ widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens. With a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Ovi Share, Flickr, or Facebook.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus — and for true music enthusiasts, you can even use a guitar pick.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available for approximately 399 USD before taxes and subsidies in the U.S. through Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago, nokiausa.com and independent retailers and e-tailers. For a limited time, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will also come with a 50 USD voucher for Amazon Video on Demand which allows you to download thousands of movies or TV titles as well as one month of free turn-by-turn voice guided navigation through Ovi Maps.

I've had this TV on my desk to the right of my computer monitor for about three weeks, and have been extremely pleased with it. It replaced an Avermedia TVBox 9 that I had hooked up to a 17" LCD monitor. The difference in picture quality, even on standard non-HD content, is remarkable. Contrast and color are great, and required little if any adjustment out of the box. And none of the backlight issues I've read about with some of the earlier 19" Samsung models.

As for HD content, I find myself watching movies on AMC in HD that I've seen 19 times before ... simply because of the radically sharper view on this TV. As another reviewer mentioned, at about a 3 to 5 foot viewing distance, it's hard to beat the picture.

My only complaint is that the sound is a bit thin in tonality. Adjusting the sound equalizer to boost the bass and midrange helps considerably, but this is one area the unit could stand some improvement (we also have the 26 inch Samsung, and the down firing speakers are a bit weak in it as well). On the other hand, much of my TV listening is done via the Sennheiser IS 410 wireless headphones, and the sound it gets out of the audio-out plugs (RCA type) on the back is full range with no loss of tonality. It's strictly the speakers.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the unit and would highly recommend it for a location like a kitchen, office, or dorm room.

Nokia E63 is the next QWERTY messenger by Nokia, set on the glorious path of the E71. Only this time it slips off the high heels to walk it in plain straight and simple boots instead. And the matching price tag leaves little doubt of what this Working Joe here is all about.

No fancy spoils, the Nokia E63 means business and brings connectivity and messaging together in a sharp and reliable package. Certainly a no-thrills mobile, the E63 does its jobs with no fuss and at a fair wage. Well, who would frown at that?

Nokia E63 Nokia E63 Nokia E63 Nokia E63
Nokia E63 official photos

Now, comparisons to E71 are clearly inevitable and maybe we know better than expect Nokia E63 to impress us as much. But who says it can't persuade through common sense.

The LG KC910 has a moniker that sends out a bold and clear statement about talent. Packing a whopping 8 megapixel camera and top-of-the-line video recording, the LG KC910 Renoir is all about capturing the moment, leaving an impression. While this alone should be enough to assert an identity, the Renoir just won't stop there. With the full touch user interface and the portly 3" display, everything is a mere touch away. Wi-Fi, HSDPA and GPS are all aboard to add the last bits of oomph to the feature-loaded LG Renoir.

The exciting facts and figures from the Renoir specs sheet however won't really give away its real-life performance and this is where we step in. We already had the camera performance of the LG Renoir to bits in our 8 megapixel cameraphone shootout but it's time to move up and look at the bigger picture.

LG Renoir official images LG Renoir official images LG Renoir official images LG Renoir official images
LG KC910 Renoir official images

It certainly took us quite some time to bring this review forward. Perhaps we even pushed it over the peak of your anticipation, but we didn't mean to get you starved so you like the meal better.

Our better-late-than-never department - duly sent to the corner, by the way - has finally prepared a full-featured, action-packed and hopefully eye-opening review of one of the best imaging mobile phones this year - the LG KC910 Renoir.

We have some good news for the future owners of the LG KM900 Arena. According to the company web site, the newly announced full touchscreen handset will support multi-touch input and will come with a dedicated graphics chip. Both features should have a very positive impact on the user experience the LG KM900 Arena provides.

In essence the multi-touch input means more user-friendly UI due to the easier input – you can have additional commands available on each screen. Have in mind though that the multi-touch will only be available for web browsing and picture viewing.

The dedicated graphics chip should provide faster and more responsive UI. With a demanding WVGA resolution screen on board it’s hardly a surprise that such a useful piece of hardware is present on the LG KM900 Arena.

The other LG KM900 Arena specs revealed today are its massive 8GB internal memory and the presence of a card slot on the device.

LG KM900 Arena

LG also revealed another interesting detail about the KM900 Arena - the process of developing the phone took the company no less than 100 man years! The number certainly sounds impressive, but will the final result be able to justify them?

In an increasingly competitive touchscreen market the S class UI (where S should stand for Superior) of the LG KM900 Arena will need something more than multi-touch to become a success. Who knows - it might actually have that extra bit in it. As usually the verdict will be passed once we acquire a unit for an in-depth review.

In case you have by any chance missed it or you need a quick memory refresh here are the rest of the LG KM900 Arena noteworthy features. Those include a 5-megapixel, capable of doing high-res video, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity as well as a built-in GPS receiver. The handset will aslo offer the Dolby Mobile feature which promises "outstanding surround sound stereo".

LG KM900 Arena is expected to start its European expansion in March 2009 but the price tag is still unknown.

Samsung Emporio Armani is the second phone with Armani branding. The first one used the Giorgio Armani label, while this one is of the less-expensive Emporio Armani line, targeted to younger audience. It has the Night Effect name because of the LED lights on the sides. It is a GSM with 3G, 3MP camera, microSD slot for memory, FM radio and music player with shortcuts.
